AB Mauri and Greggs help school kids kick start their day
AB Mauri Breakfast Clubs, which provide primary school children with a choice of food options, as well as the chance to get involved with lots of extra curricular activities, help kids get their day off to a cracking start.
Thorplands Primary School in Northamptonshire has been running for a number of months now and one more school Wheeler Primary in Hull have recently started one.
The schools are funded by AB Mauri and are local to their organisations premises.
A Choice of cereals, yoghurts, fruit and toast with various toppings are available to children who attend breakfast clubs, with the bread provided by Greggs. AB Mauri provides funding for other foods and activities and a number of staff and parents volunteer at the clubs to help them run.
Whilst providing a nutritious meal is a vital element of the clubs, head teachers believe the benefits stretch far beyond just food. Children are able to socialise with their peers, play with toys, read books and in some cases use computer based educational programmes.
Parents and grandparents are welcome to help out at breakfast clubs so they can spend more time with the children and many help with serving and washing up. For others, breakfast clubs are a fantastic help with the morning routine, providing a safe and enjoyable environment for children.
Angela Pratt, Head teacher at Thorplands said “Breakfast Club is really popular and the numbers are growing. We are really grateful to AB Mauri and Greggs for their support”.
“We know the breakfast clubs have a strong influence on attendance and behaviour. The club also provides positive opportunities for the children to socialise with their friends before school and it is lovely to see the older children looking after the younger ones”.
Tim Cramp, AB Mauri Business Manager, attends breakfast club whenever he can along with other volunteers from the organisation. He said: “The breakfast clubs provide a really nice opportunity to have input with a local school, especially when lots of the children live in the proximity of one of AB Mauri’s offices”
“I hope the children will see our volunteers enjoying their jobs and possibly aspire to work in our business in the future. In the meantime it gives us an absolutely lovely to start to the day”.
Lynne Hindmarch, Breakfast Club Manager at the Greggs Foundation, said: “The Greggs Breakfast Club Programme provides a nutritious start to the day for over 11,000 children across the country. The first Breakfast Club was set up in 1999 and we now oversee over 220 clubs, 51 with Partners.
“The Greggs Foundation encourages the use of parent/grandparent volunteers and this helps the clubs to remain free of charge and could also assist them when looking for work. Research shows that benefits of going to a breakfast club include improved parent-teacher relationships, increased confidence, self esteem and social mobility so we are incredibly proud to be able to make such a difference to so many children.
